Why is mental health important?

Mental illnesses are common in the United States. It is estimated that more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness, which amounts to approximately 57.8 million people in 20211. These conditions vary in severity, ranging from mild to moderate to severe. Two broad categories describe these conditions: Any Mental Illness (AMI) and Serious Mental Illness (SMI). AMI encompasses all recognized mental illnesses, while SMI represents a smaller and more severe subset of AMI. Anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders are among the most common mental health issues.
